The
Arts Access Sculpture Program offers the participant artists the
opportunity to express themselves in
a 3-dimensional medium. Through the facilitation
process, the artist communicates his or her specific creative
directions to the facilitator. The artists use materials such as
foam core, cardboard and styrofoam in the design and construction
of their art. Some participants have chosen to experiment with unique
items such as colored glass, wood, and even kitchen utensils.
When the sculpture is completed, the artists can choose to paint
their sculpture if they desire. The artists mix their own colors,
quantities, textures, and consistencies in the same fashion as the
painting process.
Some
of the completed works are put on display in the studio and gallery.
Others have been selected to be transformed into larger sizes and
other materials that are more durable and archival such as steel,
stone or wood.
We are currently in the process of having one such sculpture by
Stanley Bednarz, one of our
most seasoned and talented artists, recreated in weather-resistant
fiberglass. The completed 9-foot sculpture will be unveiled at Full
Circle 2002, and will be the first piece to be installed in
the planned sculpture garden on the grounds of Matheny School and
Hospital.
The sculpture garden is an ambitious undertaking for Arts Access
and Matheny, but one that we think is well worth it. It will be
the first such venue to solely showcase works created by artists
with disabilities.
